Set behind a large Edwardian home, ‘Sarsfield’ by Watts Studio is a contemporary extension designed and built for a family that loves to entertain.

The original part of the home preserves all the elements that made it special, such as decorative plasterwork, leadlight windows, open fireplaces with marble mantelpieces and heavily moulded doors. It then transitions to an ultra-modern two-storey extension with vast amounts of glazing to emphasise the connection to the beautifully landscaped garden and pool.

The furnishings were carefully curated to connect the old and new parts of the residence, bringing a feeling of luxury and glamour while maintaining comfort and homeliness within this sophisticated family home.

The home is a true reflection of the clients’ personalities. The interior palette is inspired by their love of texture, bold colour and embellishment. Through the interplay of smooth versus tactile surfaces, Watts Studio’s aim was to create a complementary and contrasting palette to create an interesting interior, through dramatic granites, striking quartzites and colourful marbles. The approach emphasises the studio’s belief that timeless design is not necessarily neutral, and that by showing restraint with the palette a sense of calm may be achieved even with the
boldest colour choices.

There are certainly ‘statement’ rooms throughout the home; the cocktail lounge with its black ceiling, black woven wallcovering, and the glowing onyx bar is one example. Therefore, it was important to instil a sense of continuity from one room to the next. The designers delivered this design continuity through the choice of soft furnishing, with every piece of furniture selected a stand-out piece due to its shape, design and materiality.
