Marc Barold’s curated collection of sculptures sit at the intersection of fine art, design, technology and the natural world. Using contemporary materials and innovative fabrication techniques, the award-winning creative leads the Australian art industry with his selection of customisable works.

Exploring the interplay of the natural and the manufactured, Marc Barold has received critical acclaim for his large-scale sculptural pieces. The Sydney-based artist had previously achieved first prize in the Under 30s section of Bondi’s Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, before launching into an illustrious career in production design. Renowned international brands such as Swarovski, Cirque Du Soleil and Lucas Film’s Star Wars are among the many that have benefitted from Marc’s expertise over the last 20 years. Developing invaluable experience working in live events, installations, film and television has invigorated Marc’s individual artistic pursuits, inspiring a rigorous investigation into the patterns defining the natural world. Contrasting organic and structured forms with meticulously applied reflective finishes, the latest artworks occupy physical space in atypical ways, interacting with light and shadow whilst reflecting their immediate environment.

The new sculptural series sees Marc push Australian art, urging the industry to keep pace with innovations from overseas. Shadowing the progressing fields of interior and furniture design, Marc introduces a high degree of customisation into the creative process. Having learnt from his recent six years spent in New York City – during which he worked with esteemed artists such as Fernando Mastrangelo – Marc allows his statement moulds to be chosen in any colour with a matte, satin or gloss finish, enabling buyers to integrate the outcome with any setting.

The size of each piece can be adapted to their surrounds whilst coloured mirror options and varied chrome finishes alter a sense of perspective. Further testifying to his status as a contemporary artist and designer, Marc offers customers three dimensional visualisations of the sculptures before ordering, and is devoted to producing bespoke products alongside cutting-edge techniques and materials to realise each buyer’s vision.

Expressing his own natural philosophy, Marc’s art pays homage to the idea that nature inherently evolves. The Evolution Dome, Transmission and The Opening are captured within an emerging range of organic forms. Juxtaposing smooth spherical outer shells with deeply carved internal fissures, The Evolution Dome suggests that planets develop from colliding dust particles. Upon selection, the piece can present as either a large singular dome or two domes, one large and one small. The fissures can also be customised so that a coloured chrome finish creates a mirrored internal surface. Transmission – a functional sculpture measuring over five metres long – visually symbolises a signal emitted into outer space. Curving panels pay reverence to radio waves, which frame a broad mirror and can be waterproofed upon request. A versatile piece, Transmission can be hung at one of two orientations to emphasise either the vertical or horizontal plane of a room. Despite also making use of a mirrored surface and crafted panels, The Opening is conceptually singular, replicating the shape of a drawn-back curtain as if peering into another dimension. The fiberglass panels can feature either a stepped or smooth texture, and over 50 coloured lighting effects can be achieved with the option of a dimmable LED backlight.

An ode to the future of art, Marc Barold’s work boldly unwraps the natural world. Disrupting the Australian art industry with his distinctly customisable offering, the mindful artist celebrates not just the sculptures themselves but the environments they seamlessly fit within.
