ShineMaker by CLB Architects is situated amid an aspen grove near Wilson, Wyoming, acting as a creative retreat for its owners who reside in California.

Positioned on 35 hectares of land, ShineMaker is surrounded by a diverse environment and bordered by walls of young pines and aspen trees that open up to expansive meadows. Comprising three distinct structures designed to harmonise with its location, ShineMaker includes the main house, guest house and writer’s studio. The main house is placed between the field and forest, intended to resemble a geological feature within the landscape. In contrast, the guest house and writer’s studio are nestled among the wooded areas. Each space is open and features panoramic views, showcasing the breathtaking scenery of Grand Teton National Park, natural flora and meadows.

The main pavilion integrates with the surroundings through a charred Shou Sugi Ban exterior, featuring carefully designed overhangs and openings.

The timber exterior is continued inside with Atlantic cedar, blending with subtle plaster and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Each window offers a unique perspective of the prairie and the Teton Range, ensuring the owners enjoy uninterrupted views. In addition to timber, CLB Architects incorporates materials such as steel, bronze, custom cast white concrete, bleached cedar and oversized slabs of travertine and onyx. Italian limestone is also selected for flooring in the primary bathroom and for a custom bathtub, which was water jet cut from a single block to create a striking sculptural element.

The main house has a rectilinear layout, compromising a common area, kitchen, separate living and dining spaces, three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a laundry room and a spacious mudroom. Adding to its charm, an east-facing feature fireplace sits in the living room, and a central courtyard invites southern light into the heart of the residence. Reflecting the client’s bohemian lifestyle, every surface is adorned with artisan details, including a custom-designed, tattoo-inspired concrete bas relief above the fireplace. Hand-painted wallpaper murals and geometric motifs are tastefully integrated throughout the interior. The colour palette features earthy tones with pops of mustard, blush and deep burgundy, complemented by contemporary art and vintage decor that further enrich the space.
