Spirited Transformation – Silver Lake Residence by And And And Studio
Silver Lake Residence embodies a contemporary spirit as it undergoes a transformation by And And And Studio, exchanging a once secluded bungalow for a spacious, linear design that now embraces an outward-facing orientation. By opening up the home, expanding living spaces and capitalising on scenic views, And And And Studio crafts a dwelling that harmonises with the natural surroundings and honours the clear modernist influences of the area.
“As a nod to some nearby mid-century greats, the structure of this home [Silver Lake Residence] informs the design of both exterior and interior spaces,” says the And And And Studio team. “Structural beams move seamlessly from an exterior balcony to the interior living spaces, giving the feeling of connection to nearby hills and trees.” The dwelling showcases the art of maximising a site’s potential while incorporating elements from the original house. While considering renovating the existing bungalow, the architect decided that creating the new house from the ground up would be more efficient. This approach allows for seamless integration with the site, resulting in a new design that’s both linear and responsive to its context.
Housing a young family, the design of the residence had to anticipate future changes and accommodate both private retreats and gathering spaces. Aligning with Los Angeles’ emphasis on open livability and connection with nature, personalised spaces for each occupant were equally prioritised. By expanding the floor plan lengthways across the site, an ample amount of natural light enters the home. Drawing inspiration from the neighbouring architecture, mainly influenced by the mid-century movement, it was clear that similar design principles should be embraced, not only due to their effectiveness but also for planning purposes.
The design of the new structure cantilevers out beyond its supporting framework below, elevating the living and sleeping areas among the surrounding trees. By softening the boundaries of the home, a sense of detachment is created from within, where the interior spaces evoke a cocooning atmosphere. A defining feature is the expansive balcony wrapping the perimeter, crafted from timber with refined detail in the metal and junctions. Preserving uninterrupted views of the outdoors was key. The natural connection underpins each design gesture and decision, both with regard to the materials selected and how the abode interacts with the environment.
