Layered Curated – South Yarra Residence by GOLDEN
Created as a muted base for a rotating collection of art, South Yarra Residence is a gallery-inspired series of spaces. GOLDEN transforms an existing penthouse into a warmly layered and expressive home, capturing a spirit of both place and people.
Aligned along the southern side of the river, whilst still close to Melbourne CBD, South Yarra has come to be defined by its numerous character-rich historic buildings and their contemporaries as they all traverse the sloping terrain. In each building, an optimisation of views out is held as a priority, as is the accessibility to the nearby Royal Botanic Gardens. South Yarra Residence, in both its lofted positioning and nearness to the Gardens, is as much a celebration of the interior as it is an acknowledgement of its surrounds.
The home needed to respond to how the spaces were to be used as well as allow for personal expression. The interior has been reworked, with the furniture, art and objects curated by GOLDEN, which folds in both existing and new pieces. Nothing tells the story more implicitly of a person than the keepsakes that carry forward into continuing chapters, and the resulting home becomes a vessel for those memories. 20th century and modernist pieces bring a unique animation and approachability to each of the spaces.
Warmth became an underlying theme throughout, with texture and tactility playing an important role in achieving that. Connecting to past chapters and a global sensibility, the home is ignited through visual reminders. To balance the vibrancy of decorative elements, the foundational surfaces of the home remain more muted and restrained, ensuring a contemporary rigour prevails.
