Conceived as an inner-city escape for a couple who split their time between Melbourne and the Macedon Ranges, St Kilda Apartment by Fiona Lynch Office is an elegant, restful sanctuary that plays with green hues throughout.

A previously dark and oppressive enclave, the apartment, located in a brutalist 1990s concrete building, now offers three well-lit bedrooms and twenty square metres of balcony space. Objects of personality punctuate the home and reflect the tastes of the clients, with the custom golden bamboo silk rug in the living room taking inspiration from their beloved labrador, grounding the curated stylings of the natural, ink and green-hued palette.

Green hues are imbued right the way through St Kilda Apartment by Fiona Lynch Office.

Conceived with privacy in mind and intended as a source of mid-week respite for the homeowners, the apartment is softened by textural wall treatments and a considered materiality. Green permeates the space, touching everything from furniture and curtains to the kitchen benchtop. The consistent palette provides continuity between the living and main bedroom spaces, culminating in a bespoke landscaped wall that was designed and is now nurtured by the client, a landscape designer by trade.

This focus on natural elements is reinforced in the kitchen, where geometric green-veined stone boldly wraps the monolithic kitchen island. Another point of drama in a space rich with daring textures, the island contrasts nicely against the sweeping heavy drapery that features throughout the rest of the apartment. With an almost hotel-esque sense of cohesion and luxury, the interior layering subtly emphasises the rawness expressed in the architecture with aplomb. The clients’ interest in bringing the outdoors in and the inclusion of fixtures such as the bar to the side of the kitchen imbues the space with an inherent flexibility and makes their love of entertaining apparent

The monolithic kitchen island adds to the drama seen in softer finishings through, such as the green-hued drapery in the bedroom and the landscaped feature wall.

It becomes clear that St Kilda Apartment is not only a cohesive, natural space in which to unwind and relax, but one that responds to the whims of the clients’ needs with ease. A space equally adept at being private or on display, Fiona Lynch Office successfully provides all the tools needed for a home away from home that wears many hats, all whilst capturing the importance of landscaped and green spaces in their lives.
