Constructed above a meandering stream, Suspension House, designed by Fougeron Architecture, gracefully interacts with its surroundings, deftly manoeuvring the site’s contours to achieve a considered balance between scale and impact.

Located in Northern California, Suspension House was originally designed to harmonise with the natural flow of water coursing below the home. However, as the current owners sought a lifestyle transformation, the dwelling needed a renovation and expansion. The project itself was an exploration into how architecture can inhabit dense natural landscapes with minimal impact. Retaining the framework of the existing building, the integration of steel elements in the expansions bolsters the bridging structure, enhancing the overall form. Fougeron Architecture’s aim was to maintain at least half of the original timber while removing unnecessary columns previously needed for support.

What truly enhances the experience of residing in such an immersive environment are the visual cues that connect with the surroundings.

By collaborating with engineers to explore the potential limits of the home, the team decided on six fixing points across the site. Maintaining the balance of the habitat and existing ecosystems was important; therefore, new openings and additional glazing were introduced to merge the indoor and outdoor spaces. What truly enhances the experience of residing in such an immersive environment are the visual cues that connect with the surroundings. The addition of an extra level (totalling three storeys) accommodates two bedrooms, serving as secluded retreats boasting views of the tree canopy.

Throughout the renovation, the original modernist structure remains intact, with all furnishings, lighting and additional elements subtly integrated to prioritise the expansive views. The open interior allows for visual connections within the space, lending an overall sense of spaciousness to the home. A mostly monochromatic palette serves as a consistent backdrop, allowing the surrounding natural beauty to take centrestage regardless of one’s location in the house. Window frames adorned in black also minimise their visual impact, further highlighting the outdoor scenery. Beyond the architectural updates, the project includes landscape restoration efforts through the introduction of low-maintenance plant species suited to the environment.

Fougeron Architecture expertly builds upon Suspension House’s existing legacy while prioritising the landscape. The resulting sanctuary is crafted through the architect’s commitment to sustainability, embracing a relationship with nature and incorporating features that connect the occupants with their surroundings.
