Positioned harmoniously on a street of older homes in Perth’s popular Mount Hawthorn, Sweep House is imbued with a modernist style, family focus and contemporary, considered design. A meaningful collaboration between the home’s owners and State of Kin has created a home that provides the perfect base for an ever-evolving family.

Nestled within its leafy, established streetscape, Sweep House evokes a Mediterranean flare through its European architectural features. Asbestos and structural issues compromised the original build’s integrity, seeing the owners instead craft a completely new home on the site. The design brief called for a structure that drew from the various material and structural traits of nearby homes in the neighbourhood. Sweep House embraces community character cues throughout the rebuild through a refreshing and modern lens, complementing the area’s essence with clever use of materials that subtly reference the surrounding suburb.

Split-level entertaining, a rooftop and an inviting pool area combine to form a tropical oasis, whilst several windows and skylights allow natural light to flood into the house, highlighting the refined interior layout.

Lush landscaping softens the façade’s clean palette and innovative use of materiality, whilst fruit trees form a community orchard at the front, encouraging neighbourhood engagement and family interaction. The garage doors are rendered with an applied finish to ensure they do not take away from the home’s street presence.

Whether enjoying the interior or outdoor spaces, the fluid flowing layout provides generous zones ideal for entertaining, relaxation, work or quality time. Internally, an expansive floor of Noce Eschilo Travertine provides the foundation for a 70s-inspired sunken lounge area, featuring the iconic Maralunga sofa designed by Vico Magistretti. Continual references to curves and a subtle material palette form a strong connection to the home’s furniture, adding an understated glamour throughout. The casual sophistication of Sweep House’s interior blurs effortlessly with its outdoor space, seeing the home’s easy indoor and outdoor flow encourage regular entertaining and memorable family gatherings.

The State of Kin team worked closely with the owners and their young family to create an ever-changing home of possibility. With a modern edge, Sweep House offers enduring and contemporary character within its Perth locale.
