Sydney House V captures a convivial spirit and harmoniously infuses an aura of calm within its open spaces. Nasia Gregory adopts a restrained approach to materiality and form, proposing a contemporary and linear home of refined detailing and lasting appeal.

Part of an expanding residential area, Sydney House V is located within inner-west Sydney and is imagined from a future-focused approach. Nasia Gregory crafts a timeless home that will adequately serve the needs of the family with a mix of open and recessive gestures. With a clearly defined silhouette marking its presence amid the existing streetscape, the form is manipulated through colours, contrast and textures. Bringing a natural connection inwards, Nasia Gregory allows light, air and the outdoors to become a part of everyday life.

Defined by a muted and restrained palette of finishes, the house’s exterior sets a tone of calm that is carried into the interior and forms a base for personalisation. Allowing the spaces to accommodate changing needs, an openness in planning encourages flow and movement. Within the mainly monochromatic base, natural stone with expressive veining is sculpted into forms that will capture the marks of touch over time. Though able to match a number of affinities and styles inevitably piqued to change over the years, the grounded base of calm tones is intended to prevail.

Facilitating an outdoor life, operable features can be opened to bring natural cooling inward, and a consideration of orientation optimises solar control. Being able to entertain large groups was also a core priority of the brief – the inner spaces of the home are grounded on a flexibility according to function, and movement seamlessly flows to the outdoor spaces. Attuned to a timeless and traditional approach, the owners wanted their home to express their tastes and commitment to artisanal craft. A selection of artwork, furniture and lighting forms the story of their collected treasures and adds a layer of depth and richness.

Directed by a natural palette and responding to context, Sydney House V sees a contemporary liveability shape the resulting home. It is through both internal and external openness that Nasia Gregory has been able to bring the essence of Sydney into the experience of the residence.
