Deceptive from approach and assuming a familiar, traditional form found within rural landscapes, Tai Tapu House emerges as an elevated and highly refined offering of its own. Case Ornsby inserts a refreshing and honest response to context, employing warmth and natural connection, whilst drawing focus to the surrounding elements.
In referencing traditional homes found within enviable and remote surrounds, Tai Tapu House is both cloaked in and lined with naturally textured timber. The pitched gable form takes occupation as a double level home – a modern interpretation of the typical farmhouse typology. Located near Christchurch among sloping hillsides and farming land, the site is approached by a series of winding roads, revealing and concealing moments within the landscape. The arrival is then made clear by the bold and consolidated form sitting confidently in the landscape. Showcasing a love of gardening, Case Ornsby aligns with the impassioned custodians of the residence, ensuring a connection to the natural landscape.
The home sits on a one-acre allotment and offers a welcomed change for its owners. Having had their previous residence affected by the latest earthquakes in Christchurch, the prospect of living decidedly removed but within a drive from the city was the ideal solution. Wanting to feel immersed within the environment, the immediate landscape design by Studio Botanic ensures a formalisation between the land and the home, softening the building edge and allowing for the growing of vegetables among native florae.
As part of a staged development across the site, the home is imagined as the first of three, with the other two forms still to come. As a nod to the English farmhouse and the arrangement of separate forms around a central courtyard, the other two structures will eventually form a Y-shape – all three homes making use of the enviable and bountiful surrounds. Whilst the outer silhouette of the first home echoes familiar rural forms, elevated elements such as the entryway hint at something more considered within. The punctuation of the windows and the pushing in of planes overlays a level of craft throughout, adding a bespoke touch to the overall experience.
