The restrained palette and minimalist design of Taurean Dream by Mali White Design put the spotlight on the home’s enviable location on New South Wales’ Lake Macquarie.

A calm, coastal home tempered with a sense of drama: that was the brief to Mali White Design – and the result is a residence that’s laid-back yet luxurious and highly functional. The house backs on to Lake Macquarie, the enormous body of water that dominates the landscape south of Newcastle. Mali White Design’s director Melissa Bayss aimed to hero the lake in her design. “This was the initial intention behind selecting a minimal palette,” she says.

The warm-toned, lusciously textured materials used throughout the home absorb the lake’s light rather than reflect it, drawing focus to the water.

The warm-toned, lusciously textured materials used throughout the home absorb the lake’s light rather than reflect it, drawing focus to the water – and working to avoid sterility. Bifold doors run the length of the main living area, opening to the view beyond and a terrace with steps down to the lake. Though the project was technically an alteration and an addition, the entire home was reimagined – just one original wall remains.

Striking marble features are a constant theme, including an arched recess in the elegant walk-in wardrobe. To maintain the aesthetic in higher-traffic spaces, including benchtops, Dekton ultracompact porcelain surfaces from Cosentino were installed. Dekton is also used outside for its all-weather durability. Cabinetry crafted with Lignapal timber veneer by George Fethers offers both beauty and longevity, with the timber sourced from sustainably managed forests. Similarly, the fireplace wall joinery was selected for its resilience and texture, while large-format porcelain tiles are used in the main living zones, and flow outdoors to bring continuity and connection with the inside spaces.

“Everything can be closed away or left open, depending on the time of day and where the owners are up to in their daily routine.”

Customisation heightens the home’s sense of luxury. Integrated features, including an entry console, powder room seat and vanity are made of concrete with marble accents, while, below the stairs, a built-in ice bucket is ideal for entertaining – but can be used as a plant vessel at other times. These elements were made of soapstone-textured concrete by Concrete Envy. Bayss also designed some of the home’s furnishings, including a scene-stealing upholstered bedhead – created in collaboration with BEDSaHEAD – and custom-cut rugs, brought to life by Hali.

While drawing focus to the lake was key, usability was also an essential factor. “The main challenges I faced with this project were ensuring the functionality was there while maintaining a minimal aesthetic throughout,” explains Bayss. “Everything can be closed away or left open, depending on the time of day and where the owners are up to in their daily routine.” This includes doors that disguise a sink and shelving in the dining area, and subtle cabinetry in the kitchen.

These luxurious elements, combined with a neutral palette and focus on functionality, have resulted in a home that lets nature do the talking – without sacrificing usability or style.
