Originally built in the 1940s, with a heavy Jewish influence, the Caulfield East home retains imprints of its origins. Opting to embrace the eclectic and layered richness of the home’s past narrative, Tali Roth of Tali Roth Interior Design brings a saturation of colour to the form. In the transformation of the multi-level abode, a series of welcoming and historic grand rooms are preserved yet elevated for a contemporary occupation. Having grown up in midcentury surroundings, Tali brings a strong connection to colour and bold palettes into much of her work. As her own residence and a place of inspiration, Terrazzo Palazzo is a playground for her own style. Connected to the area, the home pays homage to the surrounding vernacular and history of residence. In conjuring a dwelling that both references its origins and current occupation, Tali creates a home that is innately unique.

Balancing the richness of the interior with the surrounding landscape plays a key role in the home’s identity. Acting as a buffer between the built form and the neighbouring houses, the garden elements are both transitional and tranquil. The terrazzo-lined floors inject a playfulness that is translated into the final curation of furniture, lighting and artwork. Each space takes on its own personality, aligning both to its function and theme. The interior design also takes inspiration from Italian-born Carlo Scarpa and his famed way of working with stone and creating artful interpretations. The resounding post-war aesthetic celebrates a sense of freedom, which also ensures an uplifting sensibility is felt throughout.
