Registration for one of Australia’s biggest and most inclusive annual art fairs, the not-for-profit Incognito Art Show, is now open.
The Incognito Art Show is a not-for-profit art fair that takes place in Sydney in July – and artists across the country are encouraged to participate. The annual event will include works from more than 2,000 artists, including some of the country’s most celebrated creatives. Recent Archibald Prize winners Julia Gutman and Blak Douglas have been previous Incognito participants.
The show is grounded in accessibility and empowerment. Works by amateur and professional artists are exhibited anonymously: artists remain ‘incognito’ so that buyers choose works based purely on artistic merit rather than a ‘name’. Works are sold for $100 in person and on a first-come-first-served basis. Once sold, the identity of an artwork’s artist is revealed. Any artist can register, which removes the barrier to entry for aspiring artists, while the flat $100 cost lowers the barrier for aspiring collectors.
Profits from the show support arts organisations Studio A and We Are Studios, which champion opportunity for all. Studio A provides professional development for artists with intellectual disabilities while We Are Studios is a fully disability-led inclusive studio that empowers artists with disability.
Incognito Art Show co-founder David Liston says that Incognito is now a key feature of the Australian art scene and artists have embraced it fully. “The overwhelming feedback we get from participating artists is that they feel a great deal of gratitude,” he says. “They love taking part in a show that supports the whole arts community in so many ways.”
Artist and co-founder Laura Jones adds: “Incognito is a fun and inclusive way to enliven the arts scene. Both Studio A and We Are Studios are organisations that work tirelessly to support artists. Their artists contribute immensely to arts, culture and the greater community. I’m so happy to be involved and encourage other artists to register, too.”
Artists who register will be sent three A5 blank postcards and any medium is accepted. Registration closes at midnight on May 12 and artworks will be for sale in Sydney from 8am on 13 July 2024 at 410 Oxford Street Paddington. Works will be available to view online before the show. Registration for artists is free.
