The Australian Institute of Architects has announced the winners of the annual WA Architecture Awards. The Awards acknowledge the outstanding contributions to the built environment made by Western Australian architects.
The Australian Institute of Architects is dedicated to promoting Australian architects, locally and globally. The WA Architecture Awards celebrate design excellence, as well as the exceptional and positive contributions architectural projects make to the community.
The categories ranged from residential to commercial and heritage, showcasing inspired and inventive projects from within the state.
The 2021 ceremony, which took place online on Friday 11th June, saw recognition in categories ranging from residential to commercial and heritage, showcasing inspired and inventive projects from within the state. The commercial prizes saw surprising and innovated spaces produced, while the residential prizes focused on texture, movement and environment.
There were three residential architecture categories – Houses (New), Multiple Housing, and Houses (Alterations and Additions). Winners for the New Houses category included the multi-functional Marmion Street House by Philip Stejskal Architecture; Macdonald Road House by Philip Stejskal Architecture, a home which allows their clients to age-in-place; as well as Carr Street by Klopper & Davis Architects, a compact and modern residential house.
The three winners for the Residential Multiple Housing category were MJA Studio for its mixed-used development at Glyde Street; Matthews & Scavalli Architects for The Social on Henry, which saw the implementation of a gold façade on the Fremantle Workers and Social Club; and Gerry Kho Architects for the contemporary 3×3 House.
The third residential category, Alterations and Additions, saw prizes given to Beaconsfield House by Simon Pendal Architect, a 1940s worker’s cottage given new life; Garden House_Rule Street, a home with a strong connection to its garden landscape by spaceagency architects; the elementally connected East Fremantle House by Nic Brunsdon; and finally Klopper & Davis Architects for the materiality contrasting Nanhob Street.
An in-person WA Architecture Awards celebration will take place in July to present the George Temple Poole Trophy to Hassell + OMA for the WA Museum Boola Bardip, as well as the Western Australia’s Emerging Architect Prize, the 2021 E.G Cohen Medal, and all category winner award certificates.
