Drawing inspiration from the hotel bars of New York, London, Paris and Rome, The Bar at InterContinental Sydney Double Bay has an undeniable magnetism. With interiors by Alfred and lighting design by SMLD, the space emerges as an elegant exploration of ambience.

Situated within the lavish bayside suburb of Double Bay, the InterContinental redefines luxury and refinement. Flawlessly aligning with the hotel’s glamorous history – having previously hosted guests such as Princess Diana and Elton John during its time as a Ritz-Carlton – The Bar is the latest instalment within the renowned hotel, adding another alluring layer to its interior. SMLD was called upon to undertake the lighting design, leaning into moments of pause and desire. Overlaying bespoke detail, the Lobby Bar and Breakfast Lounge were transformed into a sophisticated space that beckons one within, promising an evening of cocktails and decadence.

Euroluce lighting fills the new bar, weaving both shadows and light into the very fabric of the design, seeing the Australian-made Planet Lighting LED Puck AIR fixture help to build an enticing lure. “Dramatic lighting was employed to enhance the rich red velvet, decadent marble and highlight the tables,” explains Siobhan McNabb from SMLD, “[to] create cosy nooks and bring sparkle to the glasses.” Flos Bellhop portable and rechargeable table lights from Euroluce illuminate the space, evoking a candlelight effect while also providing pops of colour. The table lights are accompanied by Flos Bellhop Wall lights, offering an indirect glow that falls throughout the interior. Adding to the rich tapestry is Flos Kap80 Wall-Washer, used to accentuate artwork, as well as Flos Snoopy, which provides direct light for the Breakfast and Cocktail Bars and is featured in a custom finish distinct to the character of the space.

Working closely with the clients, Fridcorp and the InterContinental Hotel Group, SMLD celebrates the cocktail experience, reminiscent of jazz bars past. “I wanted to ensure the lighting design helped to create an atmosphere in the Lobby Bar to set the scene for theatre, for new journeys and a place where plenty of stories can unfold,” Siobhan says. Drawing on a range of lighting from Euroluce, the result is “a resplendent oasis from everyday life – a lush jewellery box.”
