Remy-Woodcock has recently launched the Bastien Collection, a new range of highly versatile commercial and residential furniture, designed and developed in Sydney by husband-and-wife team Gregory and Katrina Remy.

Remy-Woodcock is a brand that prides itself on providing quality locally made furniture, designed for all manner of fit-outs, in the best possible lead time. The latest collection – named after Gregory and Katrina’s young son Bastien – is derived from a curved steel frame. One of Gregory’s favourite materials to work with, the circular form of the steel frame represents a deliberate juxtaposition of previous Remy-Woodcock collections and a committed focus to utilise the power of steel to its full potential.

The exploration of curves is a relatively new endeavour, Gregory explains. “Curves were always something I stayed away from in terms of design language,” he says. “For a long time I explored strict geometry based on square and rectangular volumes, our Grid collection is a perfect example of this.” As for the origins of the Bastien Collection, “My original sketch of the Bastien dates back to 2011, I had shelved it at the time due to a lack of knowing how to push the design further,” he says. “I grew more familiar with this language after working with Stephanie Marin, a well-known French designer whose work is highly influenced by curves found in nature.” “fast forward 8 years, I revisited the concept and thus the Bastien found its shape”

Comprising of three locally made ranges – soft seating, tables, shelves and planters, the Bastien Collection is highly versatile. This is a direct result of Gregory’s universal design, which creates a family of pieces that suit all manner of residential and commercial interiors. The very concept of modern space configuration has gone through a period of transformation over the past 18 months and the Bastien Collection is a direct attempt to answer the need for an increased focus on human well-being and design flexibility. “The collection facilitates a continuity in design language and flexibility of manufacturing,” explains Gregory. “This means that any Bastien piece can be custom sized to meet the client’s, and the project’s, specific needs without losing its design focus and integrity.”

Building on the theme of flexibility and without compromising design integrity, the Bastien Collection offers numerous bespoke aesthetic options, including over 20 alternate powder-coat colour options for the steel frame and the entire catalogue of fabrics from InStyle’s vast range of options. The seating and tables can also be reconfigured to suit any residential or commercial space, offering ottomans, sofa and armchairs (including the addition of medium and high back privacy screens), and four different table options designed for both dining and conference rooms. “The beauty of the Bastien Steel frame is you can play around with the size of the tables, allowing you to customise the length, width and table top shape to suit your interior,” says Gregory.

The Bastien Collection also includes a range of shelves, planters and hybrids (planters and shelves), that are inspired by the Australian environment, open plan spaces and bringing the natural world into an interior setting. “These storage solutions are the perfect space divider for an open floor plan, allowing for light, views and fresh air to move freely around them,” explains Gregory. “The hybrids and planters are really designed with a commercial environment in mind,” he continues. “We believe that plants in the workspace are essential to wellness at work and productivity. People thrive outdoors, so let’s bring that life and clean air indoors.”

Reaffirming Remy-Woodcock’s commitment to Australian design, the Bastien Collection is made locally in Sydney through a network of highly skilled manufacturers and artisans. “We believe in supporting local manufacturers and are proud to be Australian made,” says Gregory. “It is important to us to support local manufacturers and reduce our environmental impact by doing so. By choosing local, we can offer an elevated level of quality and service, not to mention shorter lead times for made to order and custom made pieces.”

The new Bastien Collection is now available nation-wide directly through Remy-Woodcock. To support the launch, Gregory and Katrina have also partnered with their friends at Bausele watches to create a charming showroom located at 75 George Street Sydney’s historic Rocks neighbourhood.
