Nature-Inspired – The Latest Collection by David Trubridge
Coinciding with the launch of his new range, pioneering designer David Trubridge is releasing a book, ‘The Other Way’. Proudly represented by distributers Studio Italia and Lumen8, the David Trubridge brand has a special place within the Australian and New Zealand architecture and design industries.
One of the most successful lighting and furniture designers in New Zealand, David Trubridge is internationally renowned, crafting works that have been displayed in prestigious venues such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Pompidou Centre, Musée National d’Art Moderne and the Nobel Peace Center. In both his professional and personal life, David acknowledges his environmental responsibility and, as a TEDx speaker, his passionate words on the narrative of artwork have found an audience worldwide.
Reimagining his classic work, David emerges with a new range of lighting – comprised of his iconic Coral, Floral and Koura designs – in both a table and floor lamp variation, with a black or white base option. The pieces engage with his pre-existing work on a smaller scale, producing similarly captivating visual arrangements of light and shadow. In virtue of their size, the lamps enable even compact spaces to become enlivened, increasing the accessibility of David’s work and signature perspective.
Described by David as his “love letter to the land and sea”, his book ‘The Other Way’ is an intuitive extension of the designer’s passion for the natural landscape. The book is influenced by David’s personal journals and photographs, which document his experiences in some of the wildest locations on Earth. Readers will find the subtle proposition of a mindful philosophy, wherein connection to nature forms a compelling response to the social and environmental traumas of recent years. The writings depict the quiet immersion into the senses that enables David to perceive life in its essence.
From the blinding white light of Antarctica to the fecund darkness of Aotearoa’s fjords, the experiences described in ‘The Other Way’ are startling and insightfully captured. David evokes vivid images of the remote Åland Islands, the mountains of Hokkaido and nightfall at sea. An Italian village café, the Baltic archipelago, even David’s own home – ‘The Other Way’ moves across these different landscapes with ease, forming a varied and emotive examination of life in place.
As David Trubridge ventures further into the commercial realm, Studio Italia and Lumen8 continue to embrace the evolution of the brand. A 20% discount on all of David Trubridge’s nature-inspired lighting is available in September, whilst the designer himself will be visiting Australia to launch his book, appearing at Mondoluce in Melbourne on 12 October and Lumen8 in Brisbane on 13 October.
