The Nest by Atlas Architects

Perched along the rugged foreshore of Inverloch along Victoria’s Bass Coast, The Nest by Atlas Architects is more than a family retreat – it’s a seamless dialogue between architecture and landscape.

Named for its nestled-in-the-trees feel and its proximity to the striking Eagles Nest rock formation in Bunurong Marine National Park, this project represents a considered shift toward tranquil, nature-integrated living, and is as much about experience as it is about architecture. Originally a modest beach shack, the home has been transformed into a 7.4-star energy-efficient dwelling that fosters a deep connection to the surrounds.

Every detail, from the natural material palette to the considered spatial planning, reflects a deep respect for the coastal environment and a commitment to a slower, more intentional way of living.

Inspired by the raw beauty of the Australian coastline, the home’s exterior embraces a muted, natural palette. Split-face brickwork, timber cladding and eucalyptus green accents establish a tactile connection to the environment, while a distinctive green awning wraps the structure, acting as both a visual anchor and a functional shading device. This tonal language extends inward, reinforcing a continuity between inside and out.

The material selection further enhances this sense of cohesion. The olive-green cabinetry references traditional lining boards, an ode to classic beachside architecture reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Mid-tone timber and blackbutt flooring form the foundation of the interior palette, while handcrafted Japanese tiles and terrazzo flecked with browns, greys and blacks introduce a bespoke, organic quality. Imperfection is embraced with every element, carrying a human quality that softens the home’s clean architectural lines.

Designed to encourage outdoor living, The Nest blurs the boundary between shelter and setting. A new yoga deck and studio extend from the main volume, creating a meditative retreat between the upper-level living spaces and the ground-floor main suite. Long horizontal windows frame shifting coastal light, while an entry atrium punctuated by skylights draws in soft, dappled daylight.

Sustainability was integral to the design, with passive solar principles guiding orientation and material selection. Cross-ventilation, deep eaves and carefully positioned openings regulate temperature naturally, while the home’s high energy rating ensures long-term efficiency. The result is a home that not only offers sanctuary but also minimises its environmental footprint.
