The Ridge by Luke Moloney Architecture and Sarah Davison Interiors
In a bid to revitalise the villa’s grandeur, Luke Moloney Architecture and Sarah Davison Interiors undertake an ambitious renovation of The Ridge. Taking cues from the original design of the home, the team aim to blend the historic residence seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
Similar to its namesake, The Ridge sits on a levelled foundation, positioned to take advantage of the sweeping views of its lush garden surroundings. Luke Moloney Architecture and Sarah Davison Interiors expertly preserve the rich history of the residence throughout the restoration process. Located just a two-hour drive from Sydney in the Southern Highlands, Bowral is historically renowned as a retreat, with its cooler climate and architectural legacy. Honouring the original owner – Sydney architect H.E. Wardell, who designed and built the home in 1923 – both Luke Moloney Architecture and Sarah Davison Interiors ensure the rejuvenated abode exudes newfound clarity and openness.
The initial focus of the project was to reassess and simplify the planning while reinforcing a sense of connection to the surroundings. Many of the modifications over time resulted in a disjointed floor plan, lacking consistency both internally and externally, without a clear flow or focal point. What needed to be emphasised in the renovation was a seamless integration with the garden because, despite its breathtaking natural setting, the home felt disconnected. Correcting this and enhancing the transitions between inside and out then became key, as well as incorporating elements that also foster a connection with the new occupants.
Opening up the home was important, and this was achieved through the addition of new glazing to frame picturesque views. A redesign of the northern facade allowed for increased natural light and airflow within the interior, accompanied by the installation of arched French doors replacing smaller windows, effortlessly merging indoor and outdoor spaces. Within the newly defined communal areas, a monochromatic palette forms the foundation and is enriched by the integration of natural timber and stone elements, lending depth and character. The result is a timeless restoration of a historic dwelling.
