Big Innovation With a Small Footprint – The Vertical Garden By Urban Eden & Co
With a passion for innovation and sustainability, Urban Eden & Co has created The Vertical Garden, a product that will turn even the most reluctant gardener into a green thumb.
Completely suited to 21st century urban living, The Vertical Garden is a self-watering tower made up of six vertical planters. With an added versatility that allows subsequent planters to connect either vertically or horizontally, the system is particularly suited to those that are short on space. The goal is to make it possible for people living in apartments or townhouses to enjoy the benefits of a vegetable or herb garden for the first time.
Urban Eden & Co has created The Vertical Garden, a product that will turn even the most reluctant gardener into a green thumb.
Urban Eden & Co was founded by Prue Glazebrook in 2015, shortly after she moved from rural New Zealand to Sydney. “Coming from a farming background, and with my mother and grandmothers being keen gardeners, I grew up with soil under my nails and spent my childhood enjoying their gardens and orchards,” Prue explains. “The only place I had to grow food in my first inner city home was a bathtub-sized balcony, where access to soil was non-existent. This inspired me to create my own planters.”
Prue’s ingenious solution to this conundrum came in the form of The Vertical Garden, but it is the flexibility of the unit that truly appeals. Each planter row holds four pods that can be planted directly into. At the base of each of these pods sit small holes, so as to allow the roots to pass through and also provide drainage, making overwatering impossible. The self-watering function works by assisting the flow of water poured into the top row of planters throughout the subsequent rows. A water level indicator on each row then informs the user when the garden requires topping up. The unit also has the added benefit of being able to be fixed to a wall, or free stand via a mobile rack.

The ambitions behind The Vertical Garden are lofty, but the simplicity with which it is executed and the flexibility of the system are truly something to behold. Gardening is now a possibility for all, no matter the size of one’s home or outdoor space.
