A thoughtful blend of old and new, Thornbury House is a family home that feels modern and fresh yet honours its heritage charm. Kate Pomroy instils the quintessential dwelling with enduring materials and a biophilic design philosophy, creating a durable and robust sanctuary for its inhabitants.

A heartfelt endeavour, the home was designed by Kate and constructed by her partner, Anthony, during the challenging Melbourne lockdown. Despite it being a small site, the residence feels spacious and open while retaining its inherent intimacy. An internal courtyard, lofty ceilings, an open-plan living area and thoughtful utilisation of space, including boundary walls and maximised storage, all combine to create a warm and inviting haven amid the busyness of its inner-city setting.

The courtyard functions as an extension of the living space, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor realms to infuse the home with natural light and a sense of openness.

The residence seamlessly merges both old and new features. Although there is no heritage overlay on the property, the existing Edwardian facade is preserved in a manner that celebrates its historical charm and integrates well with the streetscape, complementing the architectural vernacular typical of Thornbury and its surrounding area. The front portion of the house is dedicated to private spaces, including bedrooms, a main bathroom and laundry facilities. The home then embraces modern elements through a transitional space that leads to expansive living areas centred around an open courtyard, accentuated by a soaring gable ceiling.

A feeling of calm and relaxation permeates every room. The courtyard functions as an extension of the living space, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor realms to infuse the home with natural light and a sense of openness. Intricate details also inspire contemplation and stillness, such as the timber window boxes that offer impromptu seating spots and frame views of the garden. Despite its calming allure, the house remains functional, with a study area nestled at the rear, connecting the living spaces to the secluded main bedroom.

Recycled timber and reclaimed brickwork complement high-quality finishes such as natural stone, polished concrete and custom-stained timber veneers.

A harmonious, rich material palette creates a cocoon-like space. Recycled timber and reclaimed brickwork complement high-quality finishes such as natural stone, polished concrete and custom-stained timber veneers. Many of bricks used were salvaged during the demolition process, tracing their origins back to Northcote Brickworks in 1923. Contrasting the raw and earthy palette, luxe furnishings and navy timber cabinetry in the kitchen provide a touch of sophistication.

Thornbury House emerges from a deep understanding and appreciation of renewal, durability and solace. Through meticulous attention to detail, material selection and spatial arrangement, Kate Pomroy crafts a home that intertwines history and contemporary aesthetics, fostering a sense of connection and disconnection in equal measure.
