Three Garden House by Parabolica
Three Garden House by Parabolica embodies thoughtful retirement planning, fostering moments for the owners to indulge in their love for gardening. The architect ensures that every element within the home engages with the surrounding greenery, integrating nature into every aspect of daily life.
Three Garden House was designed to suit the unique lifestyle of its owners. Wanting to downsize and relocate in anticipation of retirement, the owners sought a location that would embrace their passion for gardening while integrating the natural landscape into the dwelling. Through a considered design approach, the home features a rectilinear form adorned with openings that create clear connections between the interior and exterior, inviting the lush greenery inside. As the residence is located in Mount Barker, Parabolica aimed to mirror the serene landscape, ensuring a sense of calm throughout the design.
With the exterior clad in bagged brickwork, the residence features metal details that puncture the outer shell. The overall design philosophy focuses on the integration of an active, central courtyard garden – a vibrant hub around which daily activities revolve. This courtyard reflects the changing seasons, visually engaging with the surroundings and infusing the house with fresh air and natural light. Selections of native plant species across the property distinguish it from neighbouring homes, making the garden feel like an offering to the area and celebrating the residence as a welcoming sanctuary.
Select plants and fruit trees have been carefully brought from the clients’ previous dwelling, bridging the past and present, akin to furniture or heirlooms moving between homes. The integration of expansive glazing ensures that views of the garden are central to the experience of the house, while a thoughtful use of materials both inside and out maintains a sense of harmony and restraint. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the abode but also contributes to a feeling of calm and permanence, reinforcing its role as a protective shelter.
Three Garden House is inspired by the concept of a home embodying similar qualities to a living, breathing form. Parabolica skilfully maximises natural light and year-round ventilation throughout, demonstrating how simplicity can enhance both the physical environment and daily interaction with the design.
