As a welcoming base for entertaining, Toorak House 2 is animated throughout with a curation of unexpected elements. K.P.D.O. draws from a love of music to propose a residence of soft and linear gestures, integrating a custom interpretation of ‘home’.

Making a bold statement from the outset, the curved double-height masonry form signals a clear path of entry to the home, ushering movement along the organic form to the front door. Both masculine and confident in its presence among the existing streetscape, the formal approach of Toorak House 2 captures the personalities of those living within, whilst also carving out a distinctive identity of its own. As keen entertainers, the home becomes the embodiment of the owners’ openness and sits agreeably engaged with the surrounds. K.P.D.O. inspires both a sense of old-world glamour and a contemporary freshness, bringing the resulting home to life.

The home balances both private and more revealing elements throughout.

The home balances both private and more revealing elements throughout. K.P.D.O. has created a sense of journey as one moves through the spaces, using a mix of curved openings and more linear elements to define the different areas in subtle ways. The curved openings initially soften the transition between more formal spaces and encourage a sense of connection between each. The warm and neutral travertine tone flooring running underneath brings individual veining and texture to the interior, whilst also reinforcing the resilience needed for family life.

A sense of grandeur is felt when entering the home, matching the other neighbouring heritage structures and enhancing a feeling of embrace throughout. A base of muted tones creates a timeless foundation for the collection of artwork, lighting and furniture placed within each of the interior spaces. As avid lovers of jazz, being able to create space for a grand piano in the front room and allow for other formal and informal gathering areas was an integral part of the brief for the owners. Engaging the surrounding landscape was also key – openings bringing in light from the edges of the home and from above, further enhancing a feeling of openness.

Combining the somewhat discreet with the more saturated, Toorak House 2 is a celebration of life and of the liveliness of a social home. K.P.D.O. has brought their own interpretation of a modern traditional structure, one that allows for a balancing of its comprising elements.
