Deliberately sombre, Toorak Penthouse uses a muted and restrained palette, and through a diffusion of light, moments of stillness are created within the generous home. Dita Studio instils an openness that frames uninterrupted views of the Melbourne CBD skyline, proposing the home as a series of backdrops for bringing people together.

Positioned at the crown of a series of residences, Toorak Penthouse is formed through a considered lens with contemporary gestures. An openness with the planning and between zones enhances an effortless flow internally and beyond the building edge. As keen entertainers, the owners wanted a home that would expand to suit yet would feel intimate and cocooning when needed. The height of home affords wide-spanning views of the nearby CBD. Resultingly, emphasising a connection to place became an important part of the narrative for Dita Studio.

Light is expressed in different ways throughout the residence. In the entry, the subtlety of the incoming natural light interacts with the hand-polished plaster walls, adding a sense of movement in the process. The minimal use of decorative lighting and the sparseness of the furnishings all contribute to the creation of a feeling of calm, resetting the mood once inside. Both small and more open spaces are created to match the function of each, and to enhance passivity. Spread over two levels, the upper floor connects the main living spaces with the views and remains open, whilst the lower level ensures the bedrooms are tucked away.

With a palette grounded in a spectrum of greys and monochromatic tones, the intention was to embed a timelessness and create a foundation from which to layer other insertions. Light timber flooring adds textural warmth and aligns with the overall subtle transition between differing materials. Custom joinery allows the concealment of everyday amenities, hiding storage from sight as much as possible. Natural stone, and its organic veining patterning, then completes the picture of the home as an elevated and considered residence.

Toorak Penthouse comes together as a muted and intentional destination. Dita Studio ensures the home is animated by each visitor, with the view and the generous volumes as a conduit.
