In the picturesque village of Irvington, just north of New York City, Shapeless Studio transformed a 1990s residence into a contemporary family haven. Choosing to renovate rather than relocate, the young family reimagined the existing space to elevate the home’s overall aesthetic.

The planning changes aimed to maximise usable space by shifting the layout to create additional functional areas. A top priority was converting the previously underutilised basement into a multipurpose space, featuring a family room, guest bedroom, full bathroom and laundry facilities. This clever repurposing expanded the liveable area without altering the building’s footprint.

A cohesive design language permeates the residence, characterised by natural materials, earthy tones and soft textures infused with a playful twist.

The strategy of repurposing floor space was applied at the ground level to address the awkward, double-height atrium. Infilling this area enlarged the kitchen and enabled the inclusion of a study on the floor above. The resulting cohesive layout better meets the evolving needs of the growing family. Throughout the residence, all wet areas were revamped with custom joinery and bespoke elements, complementing the home’s new character.

Timber finishes are complemented by colourful joinery and muted natural stone in the kitchen, alongside geometric tiles and veined stone in the bathrooms. This holistic approach extends beyond spatial planning and structural elements to include furnishings, art and decorative objects. Working closely with the clients, the designer curated a collection of pieces to complement the architectural interventions, creating a seamless narrative across the space.
