With the clients’ impressive art collection top of mind, Homeroom Studio embraced soft, neutral tones to reimagine a Melbourne home, creating an elevated, serene retreat.

When the owners of a grand home in Melbourne’s Caulfield North approached Romy Dankner of Homeroom Studio wanting a refresh of the main living spaces, it came with a caveat – the renovation would have to complement, and incorporate, their extensive collection of art and objects. “It was imperative there were locations dedicated to their pieces, and the tones were considered throughout the process to ensure the design worked with the collection,” Dankner says.

“Thoughtful materiality, gentle lighting and a harmonious palette work together to foster a serene, sophisticated retreat.”

The collection was a key consideration, but so was the clients’ desire for the spaces in Two Tone to form a tranquil backdrop to family life. For Dankner and the Homeroom team, introducing a gentle, neutral palette that fosters a calm ambience throughout responded to both. “We created a sense of calm by carefully balancing soft, warm neutrals with layered textures and refined detailing,” says the designer. “Thoughtful materiality, gentle lighting and a harmonious palette work together to foster a serene, sophisticated retreat that feels effortlessly inviting.”

The residence, built in the early 2000s, had good bones – flooded with natural light, with impressive proportions and a floorplan that made sense. Homeroom’s focus was enhancing its warmth and softness through colour, materiality and texture, keeping the design minimalistic with simple but elevated detailing. That ethos is beautifully encapsulated in the main living space, where pale rendered walls set a serene stage for treasured art and objects and a carefully curated selection of furnishings, including Jardan’s Thursday sofa and Molly coffee tables and a Maxalto Febo Bergere armchair from Space.

“We are really passionate about creating spaces that enhance the clients’ lifestyle and exude warmth and connection.”

Stone plays a major role – including the clever use of two different tones in the kitchen – as does bronze detailing and soft pearl tones in lighting. “All the pendants weave in the aged bronze finish we have used throughout the home, which gives balance to the cool joinery and stone selections,” says Dankner. “The intricate detailing balances the strong shapes engendered by the stone forms.” Stand-out lighting pieces include Articolo Studio’s Scandal pendant in the kitchen and staggered wall sconce in the living room, and a dramatic modern chandelier by UK-based Square in Circle over the Just Adele dining table.

Two Tone reflects the studio’s passion for not only creating homes that are relaxed and invite gathering and connection but that also tell the stories of the inhabitants. “We are really passionate about creating spaces that enhance the clients’ lifestyle and exude warmth and connection. As well, we’re strong believers that a home should highlight a client’s journey and accommodate the pieces they have picked up throughout their lives.”
