As a play on contrasts and an immersion within its rural landscape, Elmore takes influence from the natural palette it is bounded by, bringing in moody hues and textural cues. Flack Studio inject personality and curiosity through bold and unexpected gestures.

Located in central Victoria, Elmore sits neatly within its rural setting of Burnewang, surrounded by its lushly curated landscape setting. As a secondary occasional residence for its owners, the 19th Century homestead was inherited in the familiar state of multiple additions and extensions, without an overarching planning philosophy. Taking a broad-brush approach, Flack Studio reimagined the home as a series of interconnected and purposefully interlocking spaces that all support one another for the greater functioning whole. For those city dwellers enviably endowed with a rural residence, the home is now befitting of its purpose – as a home, an escape, an entertaining hub and a respectfully restored piece of it storied past.

Together with landscape by Eckersleys Garden Architecture, Flack Studio have reinjected the much-needed adoration and attention the home was in need of, bringing all of its elements together with ease. Known for their traditional and European influence, the landscape team brings an appropriateness and understanding of historical gardens and re-conjures this sense of romance on site. Having had the home for ten years prior and with a want to continue its legacy within their family for generations to come, an enduring and classical approach was applied. Together with their collection of art and an affinity for their home as an extension of that connection to individual expression, the home becomes an extension of its owners.

With the kitchen as a central gathering space, the materiality of blackened steel and leathered granite connects to a rural robustness, while also connecting to the intended and enduring projected future of the home. Taking inspiration from its surrounding, dusty and muted hues of the nearby eucalyptus varieties and the bold yellow of the canola fields in bloom are brought into the interior. The home’s positioning allows it to drink in the amber oranges of its sunsets, acting as a key influencing muse. The resulting palette utilises an immersion into colour, where spaces and their historical detailing are celebrated through colour blocking and framing. Pops of autumnal reds offer an element of surprise, while tactile aged brass hardware stand as a reminder of the crafted detailing injected throughout. Furniture and artwork acts as an expression of the owners, and as playful objects for which to engage with on the daily.

Elmore is project of passion and a connection between the landscape and time. Flack Studio has worked closely with the client to create a series of dark and moody spaces, where age is expressed through patina and natural patterning with age. The result is a series of welcoming and immersive spaces, making the home a true escape.
