Swiss appliance brand V-ZUG has made its first foray into Sydney with the opening of a sublime new studio in the inner-city suburb of Surry Hills.
Boutique European appliance designer and manufacturer V-ZUG has embraced a distinctly Sydney aesthetic in its new Surry Hills studio, which opened on Tuesday, April 9. The Swiss brand’s long-standing commitment to circular lifelong sustainability is beautifully encapsulated in the new space – a two-storey, 150-year-old terrace – with materials and finishes chosen for their sustainable credentials. Most have been sourced locally and incorporate recycled elements.
The V-ZUG design team, led by the brand’s global interior art director, Gabriel Castelló Pinyon, hand-picked all the studio’s elements to reflect its Sydney locale. The existing exposed brickwork was retained, as was the timber ceiling on the ground level, to reflect the building’s heritage, and Sydney-based designers were commissioned to add a coastal ambience to the space.
The largely neutral palette not only showcases V-ZUG’s cutting-edge range of appliances but forms the background to a carefully curated collection of impressive designer pieces, from homewares by Mud Australia and Dinosaur Designs to minimalist furniture from boundary-pushing global names like Vincent Van Duysen, Pedro Paulø-Venzon, Jorge Pensi, John Pawson and Elisa Ossino.
Gabriel Castelló Pinyon, who designed V-ZUG’s mono-brand studios in London, Paris, Milan, Vienna, Copenhagen, Munich, Hong Kong and Singapore, says locality is an essential element of the brand’s spaces. “I think it’s important because whatever we put into our space speaks about us,” he says. “Our V-ZUG Studio Sydney is very different to others around the world, and we can’t wait for Sydneysiders to experience it for themselves.”
V-ZUG Australia’s managing director, Nic Naes, says, “after successfully launching a series of studios across Europe, it was about time we brought our Swiss essence of entertaining and living to Sydney. As a vibrant, stylish city, it felt a natural fit to craft a studio set up for the Australian market to experience our innovative Swiss-founded product range. We hope the space inspires visitors to invest in V-ZUG’s leading sustainable craftsmanship.”
Those visitors will get a firsthand experience of V-ZUG’s world-class appliances, each of which utilises elements of repairability, low energy and water consumption and modular design to enhance circularity. The company’s newest range includes the CombiSteamer V6000 45L Grand, an industry-first 90-centimetre combination steam oven; the CombiSteamer V6000 45M PowerSteam, a combination steam oven with a fully integrated microwave; and the CookTop V6000 FullFlex, the latest iteration of its innovative and versatile cooktop.
The studio is located at 90 Fitzroy Street, Surry Hills, and is open by appointment weekdays from 10am to 4pm.
