When two creative owners unite, their residence transforms into an experimental playground, providing a canvas for them to pursue their authentic work. Von Leach Residence perfectly embodies this synergy, where interior designer Amelda Wilde Interior Design and steel fabricator Von Steel collaborate and share a passion for bold design and contrast.

Owned and occupied by Amelda Wilde and Von Steel, Von Leach Residence reflects the creative personalities of its owners. “The design mirrors all the things we love and the joint creation of our efforts, challenging the norm,” says Amelda Wilde of Amelda Wilde Interior Design. “Conventional dining tables felt uncomfortable, so we crafted our own, drawing inspiration from Tokyo furniture, meticulously overseeing both fabrication and design.” The creative collaboration is evident throughout, but it is the detailing and use of unconventional materials that truly define the home. While maintaining a sense of calm within, each space has been curated and imbued with a distinct character and charm, showcasing an artful assembly of design elements.

From the oversized custom furniture that serve as architectural gestures of their own to the select tactile elements in bespoke pieces, something special unfolds within the home. “Perhaps it’s the celebration of what’s already here, leaning into the flaws and quirks,” says Amelda. By retaining existing features within, the designer ensures the rejuvenated form upholds a thoughtful design. It was also essential to establish a dramatic atmosphere that coexisted with a more serene and ethereal quality. Amelda says, “Uniform lighting discomforts me. I prefer the mood, drama and ambiance that nuanced artificial lighting can bring.”

Creating a unique destination was a priority for the owners. While acknowledging the surrounding context of Newtown where the residence is situated, it is the interior that leaves one feeling like they have been transported elsewhere. In describing the approach, Amelda says, “The sense of place intensely revolves around the interior, and being an introvert, I find solace in my home oasis.” This disconnection from the outside world, coupled with a heightened internal focus, inspired the development of such a personalised place. Embedding a sense of tranquillity into the dwelling was also important, and it is through the decision to scale down the design in some areas while amplifying it in others that gives rise to Amelda’s unique style.

Through bold design choices, Von Leach Residence becomes a beautiful blend of materiality and quirks. “Like a compelling novel,” adds Amelda, “[the home] offers fairy tale vibes initially and then, boom – a plot twist – a contemporary warm space, layered with hidden narratives waiting to be discovered.”
