Watch Hill Residence by Studio Munge
A rejuvenation of a revered 1970s architectural gem, Watch Hill Residence by Studio Munge is an organic, layered experience – an enduring sanctuary deeply attuned to its rural Canadian landscape.
An iconic modernist dwelling, Watch Hill Residence is the culmination of a retired couple’s deep appreciation for wellness, the arts and architecture – elevated by local materials and Canadian design. Perched on a remote escarpment in the hinterlands of King City, the project embodies an intrinsic connection to the land it rests upon, underpinned by a commitment to enduring custodianship.
Designed by Studio Munge, the residence stands as a legacy to the original work of Canadian architect Ronald Thom, thoughtfully preserved for future generations. “The client sought a design firmly rooted in enduring architectural principles – one that transcends trends to embody timelessness,” explains Alessandro Munge, practice founder and principal. “They aimed to create a building of lasting significance, meticulously crafted with intention and care.” Resolved within an established framework, a series of new interventions instils clarity and order – respectful of the past while heightening the human experience through immersive moments.
The architecture comprises two wings spanning six distinct tiers, closely hugging the landscape and anchored by a central courtyard. “Conceived as a serene sanctuary, the residence gradually reveals itself through a sequence of layered architectural gestures,” says Munge. Framed by a rhythmic assemblage of timber posts and beams, a light-filled entry offers a moment of pause and orientation. Passing a music and library wing, a descending corridor leads to the heart of the home, where the communal domain unfolds in a spacious, open arrangement, flanked by an intimate conversation room and a sunken lounge. To the north of the site, the sleeping quarters include private loggias designed for mindfulness and contemplation. This experiential journey culminates on the lowest level, where zones for wellness and recreation are tucked into the topography.
Algonquin and Eramosa limestone are showcased in a variety of cuts and finishes, celebrating their honest, natural properties. “Both vein and crosscuts were employed – in honed, sandblasted and natural split-face finishes – providing a rich, tactile quality and visual depth,” describes Munge. Through a balanced hierarchy, a powerful composition emerges, paying homage to the region’s geology. Handmade floor-to-ceiling mahogany windows complement the reductive palette, framing expansive vistas as living artworks. Canadian white oak floors and crisp gallery walls lend an understated softness, punctuated by rich panelling, stainless steel and marble surfaces – all respectful of Thom’s original architectural vision.
Carefully sited among mature trees and native vegetation, the residence invites nature to permeate inward. Stepped terraces extend into the tranquil landscape featuring glistening pools that promote wellness and respite. Centred around sustainable principles, the dwelling is designed to exist in concert with its surroundings, employing locally sourced materials and regional craftsmanship while actively strengthening the site’s ecology. “It offers not just shelter but a sanctuary for life’s quieter moments – a timeless stage for rituals, reflection and deep connection to self and nature,” says Munge.
Conceived as a true reincarnation of an iconic modernist architecture, Watch Hill Residence is a layered experience composed of a tactile, regionally grounded palette. Embedded within the landscape, the home becomes a poignant connector to its unique locale, where the owners are embraced by a place as enduring as the lives they lead.
