Whistling Wind Island by Akb Architects
Embedded within a serene coastal environment, Whistling Wind Island comprises humble cottages integrated into the untouched beauty of the surroundings.
Akb Architects were drawn to the dramatic landscape of Pointe au Baril in Ontario, where its rugged beauty sparked a vision for a series of dwellings that balance strength with subtlety amid the Precambrian rock archipelagos and winding waterways. The location is remote – Whistling Wind Island stands as one of the furthest inhabited islands from the mainland, enduring harsh winds, fluctuating water levels and unpredictable weather patterns.
Sitting on half a hectare of land, Whistling Wind Island encompasses a main cottage, a cosy cabin, a sauna and boat storage, each blending into the landscape. Wooden plank gangways connect these distinct dwellings, all featuring pitched roofs and weathered cedar shingle cladding. The main cottage has two bedrooms, an ensuite bathroom, a laundry room and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. Meanwhile, the small cabin offers two bedrooms, a bathroom, fireplace and a kitchenette with a desk and lounge area.
Given its remote location, Whistling Wind Island connects with its natural surroundings at every opportunity. Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, wraparound decks offer panoramic views of the scenery, complemented by triple-pane operable glass walls that facilitate transitions between interior and exterior. Large windows capture stunning vistas, while the retractable walls enhance natural thermal control.

Natural materials dominate the design palette. The facade features Western red cedar, with windows and interior volumes crafted to resemble solid, sculptural forms. This approach lends an impression of resilience, capable of withstanding harsh conditions. At the same time, the modest scale and the warmth of timber evoke a sense of welcoming refuge.
Inside, whitewashed cedar boards adorn the cathedral ceiling, floors and walls, harmonising with the natural hues of the surrounding rock and the water. This modern take on traditional gabled wood cottages evokes a feeling of timelessness. In the main cottage, a fireplace wall crafted from local Muskoka granite slabs anchors the space, while soft, muted furnishings add to the cosy ambience.
Whistling Wind Island is a deeply romantic reflection on the beauty of nature.
With an appreciation for nature, the design of Whistling Wind Island embodies sustainability at its core. Both the cottage and the cabin are built atop existing structures, minimising environmental impact. The triple-pane glass walls ensure heat regulation, while overhanging recessed windows shade and cool the interior spaces. Water conservation is prioritised through low-flow plumbing fixtures and a tankless, on-demand hot water system. To endure harsh winters, recessed garage-like doors roll down the windows to shield the buildings.
Whistling Wind Island is a deeply romantic reflection on the beauty of nature. Acknowledging the immersive allure of the Pointe au Baril landscape, Akb Architects invites inhabitants to experience elemental living, highlighting the impact of simplicity and tranquillity.
