Reath Design has sensitively reimagined a 1929 Tudor-style home in Woodside, California, for a family of six, merging historic character with modern functionality to create a space that feels both timeless and renewed.

The home’s original charm is evident from the moment you step inside, where warm plaster walls flow seamlessly throughout. By opening the kitchen to the rest of the house, Reath Design has crafted a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. Hand-blown glass pendants from Lakes Studio cast a gentle glow over a custom walnut butcher block table, anchoring the kitchen as the heart of the home. The bespoke cabinetry, finished in a soft, off-white hue, complements the natural textures and tones, while brass hardware provides a subtle gleam. The adjacent breakfast nook offers a cosy, sunlit corner framed by a Prouvé dining table and vintage Henning Kjærnulf Razorblade chairs. Overhead, Castiglioni pendant lights float like delicate orbs, adding a touch of playful sophistication and sculptural intrigue to the space, harmonising with the kitchen’s blend of traditional and contemporary details.

In the living room, Reath Design has preserved the architectural heritage while introducing contemporary touches.

In the living room, Reath Design has preserved the architectural heritage while introducing contemporary touches. The original fireplace remains a focal point, surrounded by pieces like a Muller van Severen hanging lamp and Frank Gehry Wiggle stools, which bring a modern sensibility to the space without detracting from its historic roots. A chaise lounge upholstered in Pierre Frey’s Un Jardin Anglais fabric adds a vibrant, botanical element that ties the interior to the lush, garden views outside, framed by newly installed French doors.

Upstairs, the children’s communal area is as practical as it is characterful. Wood panelling and Pierre Frey Le Grand Corail wallpaper provide warmth and texture, while vintage Moroccan and Swedish rugs introduce colour and softness underfoot. This space is thoughtfully designed to accommodate both study and play, with desks adorned with family heirlooms and window seats offering cosy nooks for reading or relaxation. The layout not only fosters creativity but also encourages a sense of togetherness, making it a favourite spot for the family to gather.

In the primary bedroom, Reath Design strikes a perfect balance between luxury and comfort.

In the primary bedroom, Reath Design strikes a perfect balance between luxury and comfort. A custom headboard, inspired by a French chateau, anchors the bed. Beside it, contemporary Italian lamps from Glustin Luminaires rest on lacquered Regency bedside tables, adding a subtle touch of elegance. The adjoining bathroom, featuring terrazzo tiles from Tabarka and Farrow & Ball Blue Gray panelling, is a tranquil retreat that mirrors the home’s overall narrative – one that is deeply rooted in history while thoughtfully adapted for modern living.

Reath Design’s renovation of Woodside Tudor Home is a masterclass in balancing respect for history with the demands of contemporary life. The result is a home that feels deeply connected to its past while thoughtfully updated for the present.
