Albert Park Terrace

The Albert Park Terrace project by Dan Webster Architecture breathes new life into a grand old Victorian terrace home.

The majority of the original Victorian shell and interiors were still intact but this single fronted terrace home was in desperate need of a renovation to bring it into the current age of architecture.

The block was narrow in size so Dan Webster created a design that maximised the amount of functional space, whilst maintaining useable and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space.

The client devised a brief that focused on the restoration of the front part of the house, ensuring that the Victorian character of the home were maintained and enhanced to the façade and the first couple of rooms.

There needed to be a clear transition point between the old and new architecture that disguised the distinct difference in the architectural styles between the front and the rear of the home.

Dan Webster started with the form of the addition. He was careful to ensure there was no additional shadowing to neighbours displaying an awareness of the homes compact inner-city location .

Dan created a design that made sure a form was achieved that would be looked upon favorably by council and the adjacent neighbours.

Being in an area where all the properties have heritage overlays, the addition also needed to adhere to the heritage guidelines, ensuring that the addition did not come too far forward towards the original facade.

Dan Webster maintained and restored the original two bedrooms and added a new shared bathroom, kitchen dining living, and a study to the rear on the ground floor. A central courtyard was achieved to give northern light penetration into the living space, and create cross ventilation through the main living space.

The car space is partially underneath the first floor above. This was done to maximise the first floor footprint and provide a well sized ground floor outdoor space adjacent to the kitchen and meals area.

The first floor is comprised of a master bedroom and ensuite, with a separate powder room and rumpus room. The rumpus room opens out towards the front of the home where a large terrace has been achieved to again maximise the amount of outdoor space. The deck area that is located outside the rumpus room features natural northern lights and a view out towards Albert Park College.
