The goal of this project was to convert this single-storey 1970s brick residence into a well-equipped contemporary home, whilst respecting the modest nature of the original home and its connection with the outdoors. Improving the spatial flow and organisation of the home and adding in modern timber elements was a crucial part of the brief.
To create a spacious, practical and multi-use light-filled area, walls between the entrance hall, kitchen/dining and living were removed. To boost natural light and a link to the garden, glass doors were added to the living room, and a full-height window was installed in the study. Bi-fold windows were added into the kitchen to open onto a stone bench servery outside.
Echoing the front door, a shelving element made out of solid Australian Blackbutt with fluted glass separates the entrance to the living area. Blackbutt veneer sliding doors hide the pantry/appliances. A wood heater and a unique storage unit increases the friendly aesthetic of the living area. The use of natural timber continues in the bathroom, ensuite and study through beautiful custom joinery.
