Charles Street
by DX Architects
The combination of contemporary and traditional architectural styling provides this Richmond residence with an intrinsically simplistic beauty.
The Charles Street project by DX Architects is a recently completed residential alterations and additions project located in the fashionable inner city Melbourne suburb of Richmond. The original property was a heritage style double fronted Victorian that displayed the traditional architectural stylings common in the area. DX Architects were careful to retain and enhance the architectural beauty of the traditionalist space through their new design plan. Ultimately the team at DX Architects retained and enhanced the existing double fronted heritage dwelling whilst adding a contemporary double story addition at the rear of the property.
Inner city Victorian heritage architecture such as this is defined by ornate cornices featured on the front patio space and large welcoming windows that provide abundant natural light into communal living spaces. DX Architects wanted to retain and enhance this features, in the process developing a home that matched the leafy suburban neighbourhood exterior.

Perhaps the defining feature of this project is the innovative window & skylight that was installed in the first floor rumpus room to capture the view to the surrounding street scape and maximise the natural light present in the space. This innovative window concept has a truly transformative impact on the entire home. Natural light played a huge role in the design inspiration behind this project with the majority of rooms benefiting from large floor to ceiling windows.

One of the main architectural challenges of this alterations & additions project was the facilitation of a bold double height brick side wall. This striking feature created a clear visual separation between the existing heritage dwelling and new contemporary addition. In essence the wall represented the combination of two distinctively different periods of Australian architecture.

The interior of the Charles Street home was completed perfectly with minimalist white painted walls, a feature exposed brick fireplace that adds depth the communal living area, a space that was complimented with European oak timber flooring. The double glazed aluminium framed windows & doors were precisely detailed with a set down threshold detail so that the interior seamlessly flows to the outdoor entertaining spaces. This home is a true exploration in unified indoor to outdoor living in Australian conditions.
