The Chimney House demonstrates Suzanne & Emma’s wonderful ability to transform an existing home through contemporary architecture whilst preserving the existing heritage fabric.

The Chimney House by Arque is located in the re-gentrified inner city suburb of Redfern. This inner city site, unusual in its size with an adjacent vacant block inclusive on the title, provided a fantastic development opportunity for the owners. As a couple with a well established art framing business and a passion for art, it also provided an opportunity for the home to be extended to become a gallery for their extensive and eclectic art collection.

The existing terrace, the first in the longest intact heritage listed terrace row in the City of Sydney – Tamworth Terrace – presented a challenging planning exercise. However, the carefully considered yet ambitious design for the proposed infill was well received and supported by the City of Sydney Council.

The Chimney House by Arque is located in the re-gentrified inner city suburb of Redfern.

This new structure, addressing William Street, accommodates both on-site parking and a single one-bed apartment above, is dressed in a custom metal screen of bronze.

The existing terrace was the first in the longest intact heritage listed terrace row in the City of Sydney.

The brief to extend the existing residence required a total reworking of the ground floor taking advantage of the double width site – creating a spacious living & dining with fireplace and a large eat-in kitchen adjacent to a new internal courtyard.

The courtyard is inspired by Italian artist and writer Giorgio de Chirico. This tranquil space is designed for chess and quiet time enjoyed in an abundance of reinvigorating natural light. The courtyard is framed by white walls, steel doors and a towering chimney, built elements that heighten the natural beauty of the magnificent fig tree.

The carefully considered yet ambitious design for the proposed infill was well received and supported by the City of Sydney Council.

Arque designed additional bathrooms and remodelled bedrooms that were added to the home, greatly contributing to the transformation of this inner-city terrace into a versatile home filled with joyous natural light.
