A truly considered and thoughtful home, this simple addition to a weatherboard in one of Perth’s loveliest suburbs has become an expression of the owner’s desire for inclusion and commitment to their community.
The overarching brief for this family was to cater for the family as a whole, “unique, warm, cozy, crafted, beautiful, informal and happy” was what they wanted. The family love the outdoors and with 2 little kids in primary school, they wanted their big backyard to be as much a part of the design as the internal living spaces. With this in mind, KADA designed the kitchen and living spaces with clear views to the entire garden, so the parents could relax and enjoy the fact the kids were outside – but visible.
The main body of the original timber house was reconfigured to cater for private areas. The typical layout of central hallway with rooms on either side were retained and treated with care, timber floors were refurbished and internal brick walls painted white.
The curved custom made steel windows and doors that feature in this area of the house soften the light that floods in. The flat roof that covers the addition extends beyond the windows to create a snug and protected eating area between the house and the fence while large steel doors open out to the garden. While the recycled bricks used to build the extension are painted in the kitchen and living areas, they have been left exposed to create the last room in the house. Mimicking the curves of the windows and doors in the centre of the house, KADA has created a sculptural double curved feature that sits on the corner and is echoed inside the Kid’s lounge. This room is nestled behind a fireplace and wall of shelves along one side of the dining area.
