North Fitzroy House
by AM Architecture
The extension of an existing Edwardian Victorian House in North Fitzroy.
North Fitzroy House by AM Architecture, is the extension and upgrade of a semi-detached Edwardian home. The extension additions are formed from a response to the existing building, and the broader context of the heritage landscape of North Fitzroy in Melbourne, Victoria.
The experience is one of continuity across two distinct parts, as it was born out of the materials and forms of the existing building. However, ultimately the project ends with a stunning modern contemporary expression throughout each space.
Internally, a double height space over the kitchen, places a master bedroom in a loft space, allowing light to filter through to the centre of the house.
The old building transitions into the new lofty light space, where one encounters materials drawn in from the old front portico. Bagged brickwork, painted timber cladding, raw concrete, and gloss painted white details on the kitchen trims and the stair, give the space a tactile quality and creates a material community across two very distinct parts.
Tactile materials combined with ever-changing qualities of light have created a series of interconnected spaces that are a pleasure to spend time in, whether for private time, or when entertaining guests.
