Albert Park House
by Sisalla Interior Design
Albert Park House is a residential interior design project created by Sisalla Interior Design and located in the Victorian suburb of Albert Park.
The style of the interior has a few classic mid-century pieces in combination with contemporary Scandinavian design. The interiors were designed for the client to feel comfortable and at ease whilst home alone. In a way the interior spaces keep her company. The interiors express the clients’ personality through the artwork and by allowing for the display of personal pieces. Her lifestyle was analysed in order for her to enjoy the dining area alone, as well as with guests. Another example is the way she works in her home study to allow for the display of notices on a bespoke leaning shelf.
The house was a brand new build that the client bought once it was complete. It is a narrow townhouse on a laneway in Albert Park, an inner city Melbourne suburb. The house had it’s own set of challenges for the interior decoration. The townhouse has no architectural features or details and offers little in terms of external views so an insular approach was taken. The house is tucked away in a quiet laneway in Albert Park. Although it’s a quick tram trip into the cbd, Albert Park retains a lively village atmosphere. There are fabulous cafes in every direction, with the beach and Albert Park lake nearby. The interiors reflect a certain city sophistication.
The most important element was ensuring that the design would work for the client, both practically and spatially which can only be successful by really listening and understanding the client. The client had recently purchased a large artwork, which was the stylistic inspiration behind the interior design. The piece depicts a party scene in autumnal colouring that was drawn from the work and into the interior furnishings.
The open plan area isn’t large however instead of decorating to make it look larger, Lauren Li and her team resisted and embraced the intimacy of the space. A reading area was created and dark sheer curtains were used to create mood and warmth resulting in a sophisticated space that the client immensely enjoys. The tv is something that are a part of our lives however incorporating them into the decoration can be difficult as they can dominate the space. In response a bespoke tv unit was installed to the wall. It allows for the tv to be covered and also opportunities for artwork and décor to be displayed.
Aesthetically, the softening effect the sheer curtains give in the open plan living area and bedroom is simply beautiful. Designers can get obsessed with allowing natural light into spaces however in this case it was about filtering the light and darkening to create a moody effect. Also adding the layers of lighting has had a dramatic effect. Sisalla added a Serge Mouille wall light, and table lighting that gives a textured lighting effect and so much ambience.
The client is thrilled with the result. She looks forward to coming home each day and stepping through the front door, it really feels like home. To Lauren Li, that’s what good interior design should all be about.
