This Californian bungalow has been renovated to create a more modern open space.
Porebski Architects have reinvented a Sydney Californian bungalow to become a more suitable open space of indoor and outside living for a young family.
The existing house, which was a three-bedroom Californian bungalow, had a structural lean to the rear. Owners lived in the house for a few years before making the decision to renovate, with a brief of making the living spaces more suitable for a young family.
By resolving the awkward layout and providing better connection with the outside, Porebski Architects created a fresh and simple design suitable for any occasion.
The design includes a new open plan living space, dining and kitchen, which all open up into the back garden. The new layout design of this house provides a great example of how to better maximise the northern light into an extension, with an east-west orientation.
By using a variety of different volumes in the space, which incorporates skylights, and high-light windows, the sun is allowed to filter through, making the space more interesting and providing an abundance of natural light throughout the day.
Cavity sliding doors were incorporated into the design of the rear, to allow for the rumpus/media room off the main living space, to be opened up or closed off as desired.
The project was able to be passed through Council by a Complying Development Consent as it satisfied all the numerical values and the required codes.
