Hemingway's Brewery Cairns
by Wolveridge Architects
Contemporary architecture that pays homage to the great Australian past time of enjoying a few cold beers with your friends whilst surrounded by our beautiful natural environment.
The brief for the Hemmingway’s Brewery Cairns by Wolveridge Architects was for a contemporary craft Brewery, Bar, Providore & Restaurant to sit within Shed 2 at the Cairns Cruiseliner Terminal. The team at Wolveridge were excited to take on this heritage project as it provided a genuine opportunity to transform the social fabric of an truly stunning natural location.
The existing ‘shed’ type structure had an iconic Australian heritage presence. This reminder of a bygone era in far north Queensland architecture became the design focus through which Wolveridge began to convert the space. The very nature of converting heritage buildings in Australia also provided architects Jerry Wolveridge and Will Smart with a complex series of challenges in terms of the construction & fit out techniques. The architects wanted to ensure that if the brewery ever left the site the shed could be returned to its original form.
This architectural project provided Wolveridge Architects with a genuine opportunity to transform the social fabric of an truly stunning natural location.
The Hemmingway’s Brewery project is also an exploration into how regional Australian history can inform the design response of an architectural team. Wolveridge used examples of the critically important port industry to define the interior aesthetic and pay tribute to the rich history of the area. Grains, sugar and flour were stored in sacks piled up as high as possible like towers and objects that came to define the warehouse, which became a driver of the cage like towers that define the various spaces within the shed.
The existing ‘shed’ type structure had an iconic Australian heritage presence.
Through the Hemmingway’s Brewery Cairns project Wolveridge Architects have designed a hospitality hot spot that pays homage to the historical context of the area whilst respecting the heritage fabric of the existing building. The team at Wolveridge were able to achieve the seemingly impossible task of designing a trendy and contemporary night spot that also provides the general public with a comfortable place to enjoy a few cold beverages amongst friends.
Wolveridge used examples of the critically important port industry to define the interior aesthetic and pay tribute to the rich history of the area.
