From the Architect
House in House is a novel build in a streetscape with integral heritage value. Our concept was that the house-hold be an ‘uneasy fit’ in the street, creating a dialogue, an continuous easy tension, along side its mainly Federation-style neighbours. House in House comprises five unique internal pavilions or houses and three courtyards or voids. Each pavilion or house has unique roles, and is connected through a central axis, doubling as circulation spine.
The courtyards interrupt the pavilions, attracting natural light and ventilation. The biggest courtyard provides the limits of the block and its purpose for outdoor entertainment under a pergola. The tinier courtyards parade lush plantings, and serves as a retreat for one or two people. This brief was designed under passive solar principles.
