Coffee is the fuel that drives Melbourne, and Langdon Coffee Merchants were in need of a new lab, tasting room and workspaces for their third-generation business. Hassell’s design puts the roasting process on show while celebrating the character of the pre-war brick heritage warehouse. The space takes you on a journey – starting with the roastery, through to the workspaces, and up to the new second floor with meeting rooms, a kitchen and an outdoor deck that maximises the spectacular views over South Melbourne. Connecting the three zones is a steel plate stair – a sculptural form that wraps up through the void, while the skylight pulls sunlight to the ground floor. “Small in scale but complex in detail, Hassell exceeded all my expectations and have crafted a beautiful new home for LCM.” – Chris Langdon, CEO
