Leveson Street Residence
by Ha Architecture

The Leveson Street Residence by Ha Architecture is a North Melbourne house that sees a new three-storey family home built within the original façade of an iconic art deco warehouse.
Key to this project was Ha’s ambition to channel natural light down through the house’s three, vertically stacked levels. Also vital was the need to capture outdoor views from within the house. The clients, both experienced in design and construction, adopted a collaborative role with Ha, working alongside the project team at every stage of the design and construction process.
The property is built with multi-storey buildings on three sides, and an existing art deco warehouse façade facing the street-front. To open the internalised site outwards, vertical incisions were cut into the vertically stacked program.
The strategy was not just to make this large rectangular volume of program a habitable space, but one with views to the natural environment and natural daylight from vantage points within the house.
Two external voids extend from level two to ground, creating an opportunity for windows and natural light to each room. These also create visual connectivity and link the house vertically with beautiful light wells.
As you climb the stair and entry void you are lead through the house catching glimpses to the private main bedroom, and the light-filled kid’s rumpus room. The second void against the south light well creates a lovely relationship between the dining table above and the kid’s rumpus below.
The clients, who love to entertain their large network of family and friends, wanted a home that would cater for formal hosting and casual, weekend- style entertaining. As a result, the shared living areas are allocated generous proportions, and extra consideration has been given to layout and design of these spaces.
The kitchen, which is immediately adjacent to dining and the outdoor terrace, shares a visual connection with the rumpus room below, giving parents and kids their own space while still feeling connected.
