Melbourne Theatre Company

From The Architect
The offices and workshops of the Melbourne Theatre Company are the workplace for roughly 60 people across a assortment of areas comprising administration, finance, creative, technical fabrication (including rehearsals), set construction and wardrobe creators. The design provides for these multifaceted and diverse uses by producing robust, simple and flexible areas with a theatrical edge.
The public spaces are branded by colour, memory and texture, exploiting ‘granny’ carpets, plywood and coloured glass to generate a generous but durable setting, a bit like an old, friendly hotel. Outside, the insertion of seating, landscaping, disabled access and super-scaled signage lessens the Sturt St edge and offers more useable exterior areas for staff.
The building employs common sense ESD technology including switchable air-conditioning, openable windows, day-lighting, solar hot water and rainwater gathering.
