From the Architect
The Seaview Street project is a place of retreat for our client. It draws influence from both old and new sources – architectural and experiential. Our brief was to create a ‘space for the soul to play’. The home is a quiet place for reflection and rest, which works equally well hosting large family gatherings. With a large family to be accommodated for occasional extended periods of time, the layout of the house was ar-ranged to enable active space to expand and contract as needs dictate.
The form of the house was developed as a collection of pods stepping down the site with simple skillion roofs. These were developed to suit the accommodation requirements, and the roof shape carved to en-liven the design and carry a connection from the front to rear of the site. The building is kept low to the ground which enables internal spaces to connect easily with the garden, and ensures that the home nes-tles into its street context sensitively and timelessly.
The simple form of the home is embellished with finer grain detailing that honours the skills of carpenters and craftsmen who have contributed to the design process and outcome. This collaboration has brought a joyful spirit to the project, which may in fact have been the primary objective of the brief.
