Surf House by Feldman Architecture
Bohemian simplicity meets modern refinement in this Santa Cruz beachfront oasis by Feldman Architecture. Perched above one of the state’s best surf breaks, the home balances sustainability, functionality and a deep connection to the landscape.
When the clients approached San Francisco-based Feldman Architecture, they envisioned a family retreat that would embrace Monterey Bay’s picturesque beauty while integrating seamlessly into its surroundings. Aware of the site’s challenges, the architects crafted a design that responds to its context while also supporting its inhabitants’ lives.
The interplay of natural materials and light enhances the fluid connection to the outdoors, reinforcing the home’s organic feel and creating a palpable warmth. Feldman Architecture, in collaboration with local salvage company Arborica, utilised repurposed Monterey cypress to create a cohesive, organic aesthetic throughout the home. Not only does this timber reinforce the building’s connection to its environment but it is accustomed to the site’s particular weather, allowing the home to age and weather gracefully over time.
Immediately upon entry, the very first glimpse of the ocean in the distance is seen through the expansive floor-to-ceiling glass that makes up the rear wall. Then, standing strong and solid in the heart of the home, the staircase gives the impression of anchoring the building, as if preventing it from floating into the open ocean. The interplay of natural light softens the stair’s robust presence. Beyond it, the home opens up completely, making full use of its breathtaking view with an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge space. Opening the large rear facade further expands the space, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and experience.
The upper level introduces a refined evolution of the home’s palette. Wood cladding gives way to plaster, creating a soft contrast. In the bathroom, ocean-inspired hues enhance the natural blues of the seascape, juxtaposing the warmth of the wood in the rest of the home. Carefully placed windows in the along the top floor leading to the main bedroom offer continuous reminders of the home’s stunning surroundings.
With thoughtful design that is at once robust and delicate, Feldman Architecture has crafted a place so deeply in tune with its environment that it feels like an organic extension of the landscape. Carefully responding to its environment, the home is an effortless retreat by the sea.
