Responsive Craft – Court House by Archier
Court House pays homage to midcentury design, emerging as a creation that embodies passive living and pushes the boundaries of the familiar. Archier embeds a highly crafted resolve into the resulting home whilst adopting an environmentally-responsible approach in the design of the residence.
In its rural setting, Court House takes on an authentic and handcrafted approach whilst acknowledging the prominent architectural past of the area and celebrating the distinct landscape. Located in Yackandandah, the pastoral surrounds bestow a tucked away positioning of the home, enabling the property to become a recharging and restful base. In the creation of the home, Archier adopted a respectful approach regarding the surrounding community, following a traditional approach to ensure the home is a responsible insertion into the landscape.
Connecting both outward to the surrounding landscape and inward to the central living areas, Court House is a home founded on connection. Allowing increased visual access between the internal zones, the use of expansive glazing throughout ensures the home’s natural muses are reinterpreted through a modern lens. Vital in how the home performed was the integration of solar access to both capture energy and control temperature throughout the year. Creating a comfortable and environmentally-responsible home was an overarching theme of the design brief.
Balancing private and public areas, the internal spaces are arranged based on function and level of activity. Court House acknowledges a connection to the land, with all rooms actively engaged with the landscape. Creating and integrating areas that act as transitional spaces enhance the binding of the building to its site. The landscape and architecture harmoniously support one another and capture an appealing sense of nostalgia integral to the lived experience of the home.
Warm and embracing from within, Court House sits low and lean along its site and celebrates a love of the landscape and authentic craftsmanship throughout. Archier carefully navigates the balance of responsible and modern living to create a highly detailed and refined home that celebrates the past and present with rigour.
