Design Restraint – D_Residence by Carrier and Postmus Architects
Complementing an established art collection, D_Residence proposes a calming and open interiority. Crafted by Carrier and Postmus Architects (CAPA), the serene home represents a unique approach to residential architecture.
In the absence of a strongly specified design brief, D_Residence is created to reflect a broad vision of a coastal sanctuary. Located in the maritime suburb of Scarborough, the blockwork residence is named in an allusion to the nearby sand dunes, foreshadowing its material endurance and sense of protection. At the building’s façade, lush greenery is positioned as a natural barrier between the home and the harsh wind that carries salt from the sea, whereas the back garden possesses an endemic character, developing the notion of private identity. Enveloping the home, the landscaping indicates a sophisticated philosophy of architecture in which houses are conceived as personal journeys as opposed to mere objects.
Utilising light and dark-toned brickwork from Austral Bricks at Brickworks, CAPA gently defines D_Residence. Positioned at the garage and basement level, the dark-toned brickwork causes the practical amenities to visually recede, directing the gaze towards the lighter elements and creating the impression of a floating geometric building. The brick also features in the entryway, proposing an intimate arrival experience. Combined with the blockwork design that comprises the remainder of the façade, the bricks form a textural backdrop to the initial greenery and suggest a steady architectural rhythm. A robust material, the brickwork presents a timeless surface whilst eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance.
In contrast to the typical approach to coastal homes, CAPA sharply distinguishes indoor and outdoor spaces to reinforce the sense of retreat. Whilst the façade embraces the solidity of blockwork as an efficient form of acoustic insulation, the interior is experientially soft. A large internal void encourages communal family living with punctuating windows and apertures enabling the effect of natural, dappled lighting.
As the builder’s chosen medium, concrete is featured throughout the property, offering a neutral complement to the owners’ art collection. The raw quality of the material is enhanced in its external application – nodding towards a brutalist inspiration – whilst internally, the understated lighting elicits a gentler, more nuanced presentation.
Aesthetically flexible, D_Residence testifies to the impressive design restraint of CAPA. Ultimately determined by the influence of its occupants, the coastal home welcomes personal injections of colour, texture and vibrancy.
