Dolly by Studio John Irving Architects
Nestled in the heritage-lined streets of Auckland, Dolly by Studio John Irving Architects is a thoughtful expression of how personal experience and architectural insight can reshape inner-city living.
Designed as the architect’s own home, the project reimagines a tight urban footprint by centring the layout around a lush internal courtyard. This simple yet powerful gesture transforms spatial limitations into opportunities for connection, light and calm.
From the street, the home maintains its original 1890s villa facade, honouring the area’s historical context. Behind this preserved front, a bold contemporary structure unfolds, creating a visual and material dialogue between past and present. Slate flooring, cedar ceilings, and a tranquil pond lend an elemental softness to the space, while skylights and openings guide natural light deep into the interior.
Every room is positioned to benefit from the courtyard’s light and greenery, ensuring a visual and emotional continuity throughout. The palette of dark stone and natural textures enhances a sense of permanence and restraint. Rather than impose scale, the design extends sightlines and flow, allowing the home to breathe.
Dolly stands as a quiet, confident statement about the role of intention in architecture – where simplicity fosters serenity, and small spaces speak volumes.
